この歌の原曲は、1921年、イギリスの作曲家ホルストの組曲『惑星』作品32（The Planets Op. 32）第４曲「木星」第二部です。

　作詞は1918年、イギリスの外交官セシル・スプリング＝ライス(Cecil Spring-Rice/1859-1918)によります。（以上引用）
　イギリスの愛国歌であり、国教（プロテスタント）聖歌でもあり、イギリス国民から「国歌にしよう」という声もあがるほど、愛されている曲です。
　亡きダイアナ妃も「学生時代から一番お気に入りの歌」で「結婚式にはぜひこの歌を演奏してください」とリクエストなさったそうです。
　けれど私には、結婚式のときより、お葬式で奏でられたこの曲が、しみじみ美しく哀しく強く印象に残りました。私もとても好きな･･というより敬愛する曲です。

　日本では,このメロディに素晴らしい歌詞がついて、平原綾香さんが
『ジュピター』として大ヒットさせていますね。
